How to Move Forward When You Don’t Know What Comes Next

There may be times in your life when the path ahead feels unclear.

You can sense something is changing, as if an old chapter is ending.

It’s when the familiar starts to feel “off” or different somehow.

That’s when you realize something new is calling for your attention. Pulling you into some unfamiliar territory that feels both exciting and intimidating.

Moving Forward When You Don’t Know What Comes Next

Often, you won’t see exactly where it’s taking you. And you may think you NEED to know the complete plan, see the complete picture, before you are fully willing to move.

You need to know what comes next.

You need to know how you will get there.

You need to know whether you have enough experience, resources, confidence, or certainty to make the move.

The truth is, the path reveals itself one step at a time.

The next step becomes clear after you take the first step. And more is revealed as you continue to move along the path leading you in a new direction or new way of being.

It takes trust. It takes courage. It may even call on your faith to overcome the fear.

You may not need to know the how yet.

You may simply need to ask:

Who can help me?

What is one step I can take?

Where can I begin?

This is one of the insights that stayed with me from my recent conversation with Daman Grewal on Awaken and Ascend.

what's your next step conversationWhat Does the Future Look Like?

Daman shared a grounded perspective on moving forward when you don’t have everything figured out:

Focus on the who, the what, and the where. The how will reveal itself.

There is something deeply freeing about this. Did you feel it in your body as you read that?

Because so often we become stuck when we haven’t even taken the first step.

We imagine the resources we will need.

The knowledge we don’t yet have.

The obstacles that might appear.

The things that could go wrong.

And that’s whey the future can seem so heavy.

If you could bring yourself back to the present for a moment, what is the next step that is available to you right now?

Sometimes that step is a conversation.

Sometimes it is a boundary.

Sometimes it is allowing yourself to rest long enough to hear what is actually true for you.

Sometimes it is finally acknowledging that something has come to completion.

Maybe, it’s taking one small action toward that thing that has been calling you forward.

Resourcefulness begins where certainty ends.

Have you been focused intensely on what you don’t have?

The experience.

The money.

The connections.

The perfect opportunity.

The complete confidence.

If that’s you then you can start asking yourself, “How can I become resourceful with what I already have?”

That question can change everything.

Because you may already have more than you realize.

A relationship.

A skill.

A lived experience.

A story.

A curiosity.

A willingness to ask.

A person who knows a person.

A first step.

The Path Reveals Itself One Step at a Time

You don’t need to force certainty.

You don’t need to become someone else before you begin.

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

You can begin with what is here.

With who you are.

With what you already know.

And with the next step that feels possible.
